Vocabulary is a basic element of a language. Therefore, vocabulary learning is a very important and basic part of language learning, especially in English learning. All learners want to have a lar ge amount of vocabulary but som etimes they don’t know how to enlar ge their vocabulary ef fectively. Researches showed that learning a language in audio-visual context can im prove learners’ vocabulary size. This thesis mainly tries to find out the answers to the following questions:1. What role does English video play in incidental vocabulary acquisition for English majors?2. What are the ef fects of tasks with dif ferent involvement load on English majors’ incidental vocabulary acquisition in audio-visual context?3. What are the students’ attitudes toward Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition in audio-visual context? The subjects in this study are 26 freshmen of English major from xx University, and they were divided into two parall el groups(Group A and Group B) by a vocabulary size test at the be ginning of the semester. Students in Group A and Group B had different watching tasks while watching the video segment and the involvement load in Group A is higher than in Group B. All the subjects were asked to an immediate test with 10 target words after they have finished watching each video and accomplishing their tasks. A delayed test would be done one week later with the same 10 target words but not in the sam e order. The data were collected and analyzed by SPSS 17.0 after the whole experiment. The experiment proved that learners can acquire vocabulary incidentally in audio-visual context and watching Eng lish video with both Chinese and English subtitle can contribute to vocabulary acqui sition. Furthermore, learners can acquire much more vocabularies with higher involvement load in audio-visual context. Thus, the experiment proved the Involvem ent Load Hypothesis to som e extent. Therefore, teachers can make full use of m ultimedia material in the p rocess of teaching and let the studentswatchnative English video in orde r to improve the efficiency of students’ vocabulary acquisition.
