With the policy of reform and opening-up going further, reading an original English book has been being an option to the public. English used to be an elite language mastered by a small number of people in China, where the English books of various industries could be read by the public only through the translation by great translators. The translated text was the only source from which people obtained the information of the outside world. However, with the increasing popularity of English, a growing number of readers tend to read the original work, accompanied by the translated book. For those readers, the expected translation is both a carrier of information and helper in learning English and foreign culture. These two purposes are especially important to the teenager readers. In order to cater to the reading trend, publishers have introduced various original English books, and Science Reader’s is one of the best-sellers. However, inadequate in language competence, teenager readers always misunderstood the information or got confused, and, as a result, felt frustrated. Therefore, a Chinese version is now in demand so that it can both provide the accurate information and improve their English. This is a report based on the extracts from Lesson One to Lesson Twelve in the fifth volume of Science Readers. Based on skopos theory, various translation methods have been employed to meet the expectation of the target readers:the methods to make the translated text an information carrier-addition, omission, concretion of the pronouns; and the methods to make the translated text a helper in learning English and culture -following the original syntactic order, and adding notes.Through the translation, the author realized that when translating a teenagers’ popular science book for target readers, a translator should have a comprehensive understanding of translation task, which focuses on the purpose based on the practical market demand, highlights readers’motivation and present knowledge structures and level, so that a reader-friendly translated text could be accomplished with a balance among the skopos of translation, coherence to readers, and fidelity to the original book.It is hoped that this report can offer some referential value for translation tasks with similar purpose.
