Adrienne Rich, American poet in modern century, is a famous feminist, whose works reflect women’s low social status and encourage them to fight for rights deserved. The translation is selected from Rich’s book What Is Found There: Notebooks on Poetry and Politics (1993) with no Chinese version available. Besides, the domestic studies on Rich, still at exploring stage, need further development with Rich’s translated works for research materials. Therefore, the translation emerges. This is a project report based on the translation of chapter ⅶ , chapter ⅹ, chapter ⅹⅹⅰ, chapter ⅹⅹⅰⅰ and chapter ⅹⅹⅳ selected from What Is Found There:Notebooks on Poetry and Politics. The book, with the illustration of Rich’s emotion and idea, reflects her personal ideologies. According to the translation of the book, domestic studies on Rich are expected to develop. With the help of the translation and the project report, the author hopes to accumulate experience for future translation. The author will mainly analyze specific problems on translation and find optimized methods. The theory of "functional equivalence" and "readers’ response" will be chosen as theoretical guidance for the translation. The equivalence in meaning and readers’ response is given priority. In chapter three "Case Study", specific methods like literal translation, addition, translation compensation and split will be proposed in accordance with the theory for the purpose of solving specific problems including translation on lexical, syntactic and cultural layers.Eventually, the following conclusions can be drawn:first of all, a good understanding of the author and content of the book is necessary in order to avoid language obstacles; then, a solid knowledge of one’s major and mother tongue will be helpful in avoiding difficulties in transformation between Chinese and English; futhermore, repeated modification will be another factor to ensure a better translation. With problems found time after time, a better translation will be presented.
