Chinese Literature is the only foreign official publication of the translation of Chinese literature and culture in china so far. In the specification and the restriction of the main ideology discourse, Chinese Literature displayed different characteristics and at the same time showed the different connotations of national image during the Cultural Revolution and the period of reform and opening up. In the Cultural Revolution, the magazine praised highly the affinity to the people, Mao Zedong Thought and the world revolution; In the new period of reform and opening up, the magazine started to diversify introducing China, especially focused on the reform literature, feminist literature and national culture. This change actually represented the complex and subtle relationship between literature and politics. In the 1980s, the issue of Panda Books Series made a huge impact, and to some extent, reflected the revival of literariness. Today, how to set up the positive national image still has a long way to go. We may get some experience and inspiration from the practice of Chinese Literature and Panda Books Series.
