When the end of Han dynasty, the rulers took inaction rules, meanwhile, Buddhism was introduced into China. Its doctrine was regarded as “inaction” by rulers, therefore, got accepted and spread in the upper class.Buddhism developed quickly during the Qi and Liang period. Buddhism gradually entered the daily life of society with the spread of Buddhism, therefore, the penetration of Buddhism had a great effect on the social life at that time. Emperor Wudi discovered that Buddhism could maintain social stability, so Buddhism played an important role in the ruling ideology of emperor Wudi, and had a great impact on the ruling thought of Wudi. Understanding history should grasp the causal relationship of things` development. The essay starts from the background of the historical development, through the analysis of the development of status of Buddhism during the Qi and Liang dynasty, so as to explain the influence of Buddhism on ruling ideology of Emperor Wudi. The full text is divided into the following parts:The first part of the paper is to study what the problem is, and provide the answer to the significance of the research questions, and then carries on the narrative summary of the general situation of the study of current problems.The second part is based on historical materials, introducing the spread of the Buddhism and its impact on the social life at that time in detail. The essay introduces the spread of Buddhism through the translation of Buddhist scriptures, preaching, the construction of the temple status these three aspects, and introduces the Buddhism`s influence through school, law and family these three aspects at that time.The third part from the perspective of social politics, economy, culture and so on, combining with Historical materials to analyze the content of Buddhism in ruling thoughts of emperor Wudi. Analysis on social influence of emperor Wudi belief of Buddhism is carried on from different classes.Buddhism was accepted and criticized by the literati. Lower class people regarded Buddhism as a spiritual homeland to escape from trouble. The over development of Buddhism would damage to the interests of the ruler, which leads to rulers restrict the development of Buddhism. Emperor wudi had a full understanding of the functions of Buddhism. He recognized that he can consolidate his own position by advocating people to believe Buddhism. He can make use of Buddhists doctrine to control people`s mind and make use of Buddhist ceremonies to maintain social order, therefore, he even put forward the thought that established a Buddhist country.The fourth part is the summary of this paper. The key to elucidate why emperor Wudi is so keen on Buddhism. The fundamental reason is that he regarded Buddhism as a appropriate ruling tool of society to maintain the consolidation of feudal rule.
