As a kind of disti nguished school, the study of Akut agawa has accumulated a lot of academic achievements. But many scholars both at home and abroad focused on the author’ s view of human nature, artistic value, th e Chinese perspective, narrative art of the works and com parative literature studies, religious studies and so on. Th e study on uncertainty in Akutagawa’ s novels initiates a new research of Akutagawa’s literature, which not only explores the features of Akutagawa, but also expands the field of Oriental literature. The complexity and uncertainty features of characters in Akutagawa’s are different from the good-versus-evil sy mbol typed characters in some traditional novels. Of these features, the one is to analyze human nature in different levels. He often reveals the light and dark side of human nature which exist in contradictory way through describing the abundant psychological connotation of the characters. And the characters also reflect the writer’s thoughts of human nature. The second is subversion and different interpretation of the traditiona l characters. The idol of int rinsic cognition is opposite to ordinary people. To inspire people, he explores and valuates both history and reality, wars and morality through the deconstruction of sanctity.Akutagawa’s works include the uncerta inty of plot, which is dif ferent from the certainty of tem poral and causal relationship of tradi tional novels. Firstly, to narrate those plots which are difficult to restore, the writer is good at using the skills of m ultiple perspectives, unreliable narration and description of unrelated ones. Readers will find the only right answer from his creative narration. Akutagawa shows th e unreliability of human speech and the nihility of history reality which co mes form human speech. Secondly, the author breaks the enclosed ending system of novel by the skills of interrupting the plot, setting up suspense and making conflict prominent to create an open ending, which leaves the readers to ac hieve aesthetic experience by thinking of the uncertainty of the ending.Akutagawa ’s works always sh ow a characteristic of antinomy and split which is embodied in many ideas field. The uncertainty of his artistic view and views of goodness and evilness is especially distinct. Above all, Akutagawa has created a lot of characters who believe in art for art’s sake. But he also realized that it is impossible because of the conflict between art and life, art and morality. So the trend of the destiny of his characters also showed his paradoxical attitude and complicated thinking of art. Akutagawa envisages the existence of evil in human natu re and tak es the universality of it objectively. But he also calls for the a rrival of good and th e selfless love of human beings during exploration of ev ilness. His most impressive cognition is also embodied in the judgment of goodness and evilness in utility field. Goodness and evilness are relative and uncertain based on the utilitarian judgement standard. This dissertation has analyzed the uncertainty of Akutagawa’s works and explored some new ideas in his literatu re and shows the real Akutagawa to readers, which constructs the innovation of dissertation.
