A Reoort On The Translation Of Our Kids:The American Dream In Crisis(Excerots)

With the passage of time,people pay more attention to the so-called ―collapse of the American Dream‖ and the transformation of the American life. As a symbol of the national spirit, American Dream has experienced such stages as emergence, development, climax and crumbling. The translator has chosen the new book Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis(2015), whose author is Harvard University Professor Robert D. Putnam, as the source text and has written a translation report based on the translation work.From its language style, we know that the source text is not an academic work but a popular book with many colloquial expressions. The source text mainly covers four generations from the 1950 s to the 1990 s, showing real life stories vividly to the reader and describing emergence, development and decline of American Dream.This report includes four parts. The first part is an introduction of the translation task, which mainly includes the source of the task, an introduction of the author as well as his works. The second part describes the translation process from preparation to translation and proofreading. The third part is case analysis, which analyzes the corresponding translation skills on lexical level, syntactic level and rhetorical level. The translator selects typical cases combined with the problems encountered in translation practice. The uses of translation skills such as extension, neology, conversion of word classes and litotes were specifically introduced on lexical level; the uses of translation skills of syntactic linearity, amplification, semantic variation, reinventing sentence structures were introduced on syntactic level; the uses of translation skills of simile and metaphor, hyperbole, synecdoche were specifically introduced on rhetorical level. The fourth part is the conclusion, including the analysis of difficult points and reflections.
