Contemporary Visual Culture And Its Development Predicaments

The transition from traditional rational visual arts to postmodern perceptual visual culture is of great importance and value in the history of western civilization. However,as a cultural model which mainly chooses image as its carrier, contemporary visual culture is also facing with a series of development predicaments, for example, aesthetic fatigue, visual hegemony, virtual prosperity,visual barrier, conspicuous consumption and so forth, even though it has developed so much till today and has done much for fighting with the traditional rational visual culture. Therefore, it is very necessary for us to explore the essence of contemporary visual culture as well as the reasons for the development predicaments of it. What’s more, the most important thing is to find out some feasible ways to get rid of these development predicaments.The basic structure of this thesis is: In the preface, firstly, I introduce the background, the situation, the meaning and the problems of visual culture studies both at home and abroad. Then I briefly summarize the major research methods, the difficulties and the innovation points in this thesis. In the text, firstly, I clarify the basic concepts, the evolutionary process and the dual characteristics of contemporary visual culture. Then I sum up the concrete performance of contemporary visual culture based on some typical cases both at home and abroad and summarize the major development predicaments of it. At last, I analysis the major reasons for these development predicaments and try to put forward two feasible ways to get rid of these development predicaments. In the conclusion, I generalize my main ideas in brief words based on the full text firstly and then I summarize the original intention of this thesis.
