Painting is existed as a a two-dimensional space on canvas,there is no real space on canvas,the space on canvas is created by artists. From depict the objective space we could seen on traditional painting to value the subjective thinking of artists on the contemporary painting, the development of western art history is accompanied by the evolution of the artist’s concept of space. It has described the evolution of the concept of space, and reflect on my own paintings by study modern artist’s expression techniques of space.This paper is consisted of four sections. In chapter one, I clarified the concept of space, and the history of space concept and form in western traditional painting. The second chapter analyzes the background of the modern space concept’s, and sorts out the space language and forms of modern paintings. The third chapter is about the representative artists or Schools against the background of western modern painting’s pluralistic development. In chapter four, I state the importance of combines subjective consciousness and intuitive feelings with declare my own experience, and then presents my understanding about space.
