A Study On The Emotional Colors Of "Wei X Er X" Construction

The object of this thesis is the form of "wei X er X"(为 X 而 X), and the first X and the second X are always consistent in the nature, meaning and form of the word. This thesis consists of one introduction and five chapters:The introduction mainly discusses the origin, the object, the status, the ideas, the significance, the methods and corpus sources of the research, which lay the foundation for the next chapters discussed.The first chapter mainly discusses the semantic characteristics of "wei X er X" from three levels. Firstly, the first X and the second X are always the same, which mean purpose and method separately. Secondly, the second X changes as the first X changes, so the first X becomes the core of the meaning, emphasizing the purpose is just X; Lastly, "wei X er X"is a typical construction, which has a whole meaning and usually can express a variety of emotional colors.The second chapter investigates the reasons for different emotional colors of "wei X er X" construction. Because the intervention of speaker’s subjectivity, speakers have different views of understanding of "wei X er X", creating different pragmatic expression effects. Specifically, when a speaker takes a perspective of "purpose=method", he thinks the purpose of "wei X er X" is only one purpose/a pure purpose/a real purpose. The semantic function is:X can mean method and also can mean purpose, namely X can be a purpose equal to method. Secondly, the concrete proportion of different emotional colors of "wei X er X" made of all kinds of words has a big relation with the word’s capacity of being a purpose equal to method. Finally, the whole tendency of emotional color of "wei X er X" construction is negative.The fourth chapter investigates the solidification of negative tendency of "wei X er X" construction. This chapter mainly discusses the process of solidification and solidification degree of different kinds of typical construction made of different kinds of words.
