Analysis Of Omission Of Semantic Deviation In Media Interpreting

With the deepening of the globalization, media interpreting plays an increasingly important role in the global communication. The earliest application of media interpreting can be traced in France in the 1960s. At that time, the media interpreting programs were adopted by many television stations as a regular form. The media interpreting program first appeared in 1991 when Taiwan media reported the first Gulf War. In mainland China, media interpreting is a new rising form in recent years, yet it plays a more and more important role in society. The use of media interpreting in the live program is also increasingly widespread because of the great popularity of the Internet, the development of broadband technology and a number of new video sites. Some domestic video sites broadcast the shows of great and significant events by media interpreting.The research material is based on the media interpreting of the second televised presidential debates in 2012 from Tencent Network. These instances are mapped to ear-voice span (EVS) and analyzed according to Daniel Gile’s Efforts Model. Under the observation method, this thesis makes a classification, purposed omitting and unwitting omitting, aiming to analyze omissions mentioned above and their causes during the debate. In the end, this thesis suggests that the interpreter can take omitting as an effective strategy. The coping strategies suggested in the study can be used by media interpreting practioners to improve their performance and they may also be helpful for future researchers in this area.
