With the rapid development of science and technology, people’s reading habits have changed a lot. Though living in a free, open and inclusive college culture, many students fail to develop a good reading habit. This phenomenon is increasingly distinct, thus some famous people give attention to it. Bai Yansong, a famous newsman in China is one of them.This report cites the Chinese to English consecutive interpretation of Reading: to Discover Yourself in Books, one of Bai’s speech, as a case study. The speaker has mentioned many famous writers and their works, and described a lot the past reading trend in his college, thus demanding highly on interpreter’s cognitive context and the ability of processing information. Therefore, with the Principle of Optimal Relevance as the point of departure, this paper discusses difficulties in cognitive context and passage, and analyses some practical interpreting methods that could realize the optimal relevance for target audience. As to difficulties in cognitive context, the writer suggests methods like literal translation, transliteration with explanation, hypernym, direct interpreting and meaning explanation. With regard to difficulties in passage, the writer proposes omission and supplement implicit information. The utmost aim is to improve the interpretation effect and realize the optimal relevance for target audience, thus achieving the goal of successful communication.
