Art song originated in Europe in the 18th century. A lot of art songs were introduced into Chine in the Early 20th Century, which had set off a creation upsurge of Chinese art songs. At the same time, bel canto was brought into China. The intersection of these two classical western arts led to an important topic that how to use bel canto to sing Chinese art songs. The author thinks that the key to sing Chinese art songs is to follow objective laws of Chinese Articulation meanwhile not to be independent of the "Tubular" requirements of bel canto for sound. This is the only way to sing Chinese art songs by_bel canto. This article discusses singing methods of Chinese art songs from three aspects. Firstly, the article sketches the origination of western art songs and its development in China to give a general history of art songs. Then the author illustrates why accurate articulation of Chinese language and good breath support play the key role in well singing Chinese art songs. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that only if the singing and performing style conform to the Chinese aesthetic consciousness and orientation can it bring continuous vitality to Chinese art songs.
