The paper is a report on English-Chinese translation of The Selected Stories of Merce Rodoreda. The author chose two stories Blood and Carnival from this book as translation materials. The writer of this book Merce Rodoreda is considered to be the most important Spanish novelist of the postwar period. The short stories of Merce Rodoreda are highly appreciated by readers, which bring her great reputation in the academia especially in America and Spain. And Martha Tennent, a famous English-language translator who works primarily from Catalan and Spanish, translates it into English. Based on Martha Tennent’s translation, the author translated it into Chinese. Focusing on dialogues in the novel, the report intends to study the correlation between the translating methods of fictional dialogues and the reproduction of characters’images. As we all know, novel is a form of literature centered on shaping characters. In the novel, characters are not only main objects description, but the content of the whole book revolves around the formation and development of the characterization. It is no exaggeration to say that characters are the soul of one novel. Without characterization, the novel will not be itself. The characterization is revealed through the description of portrait, language, behavior, psychology and manner, among which the most basic and direct method is characters’dialogues. Some even call dialogues "the soul door". Therefore, the translation quality of dialogues will not only affect the shaping and reproduction of characters and characterization, but also play a crucial role in building the plot, sparking readers’interest and creating the beauty. The paper regarded "three coincidings"—translation coinciding with characters’identities and roles, translation coinciding with characters’ habits and personalities, and translation coinciding with the environment or situations in the translation of fictional dialogues proposed by professor Huang Fenbao(2000) as translation aims, combing the functions and features of fictional dialogues to explore the translation methods, such as the use of dialects, the omission of subjects, the transformation of sentences, the reverse of sentences and so on.
