With the dramatic development of film and television transmission industry, on-line open courses of world-famous universities become the hot pursuit of many Chinese netizens. As a new kind of knowledge dissemination mode, on-line open courses enjoy both hot pursuit and obstructive factors. Communication barriers and comprehension obstacles have stopped many Chinese people’s steps towards video resources of professional courses that introduced from foreign countries. In this context, subtitling of on-line open courses goes into people’s vision gradually. After comparison and analysis, the author chooses subtitles of Harvard open course Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do, which are translated by YYe Ts subtitle group, as research objects. The author discusses the subtitling from the perspective of lexis, syntax and context, and gives case study by combining Verschueren’s adaptation theory into it, thereby summarizing subtitling methods and techniques of on-line open courses. In this thesis, the author firstly starts from the language of Justice to analyze the translation of key words, terminologies, long sentences and translation in specific context. Meanwhile, in each language classification, the author uses the four aspects of adaptation theory, namely, contextual correlates of adaptability, structural objects of adaptability, dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation processes, to analyze specific cases. Finally, conclusions drawn by this thesis are as follows: first, subtitling of online open courses has its lexical, syntactical and contextual characteristics which are different from that of films and TV series; second, in the process of subtitling of on-line open courses on social studies, two principal subtitling methods are literal translation and free translation, and two main subtitling techniques are amplification and omission.
