| Nowadays, the way that people communicate with each other has undergone great changes. Language which was once the dominant mean of communication has been challenged since more and more social semiotics began to take part in the meaning-making system. Based on this, multimodal discourse analysis has emerged and boomed since 1990s.As a special kind of multimodal discourse, the websites include abundant visual recourses and play an extremely essential role in the process of English information transmission. Besides, the official website of Chinese Olympic Committee, the important international window for Chinese sport events, lies great social value in transmitting important sports information, promoting Chinese culture and establishing a good image. Therefore, undertaking MDA on the official website of the COC can help understanding the important roles of the COC in prompting the sport events. Excellent MDA can also provide suggestion to the website.The official website of Chinese Olympic Committee, with the meaning construction by the integration of images, words, colors and other symbols, is a good research object of the multimodal discourse analysis. Kress and Van Leeuwen’s visual grammar is taken as theoretical basis in this thesis to carry out the concerning studies on the visual recourses firstly. Then the summary of contribution to the construction in the integration of meanings is discussed within the scope of multimodal discourse analysis. Therefore, four research objects:the English homepage of the website, the web page of "News", "China & Olympic Movement" and "Marketing" are chosen as the research objects in this thesis. Based on the analysis of representational meaning, interactive meaning and compositional meaning on the fifty images, the statistics of multi-form elements of each web page will be summarized and different realization ways applied on three meanings of different multi-form images will be concluded. Then, the overall evaluation will be also given to the three meanings’ realization of the website and the shortcomings of the multimodal expression form on the website will be pointed out and the suggestions will be given. Through the analysis, results show that:1.in the representational meaning aspect, conceptual processes are preferred to represent participants in the images on the website.2. In the interactive meaning aspect, "offer" images are more widely used than "demand" images in the images, which conforms to the purposes of transmitting sports events and spreading sports spirits.3. The compositional meaning is realized by the rational distribution of elements in the images.In general, through the analysis, the thesis aims to further verify the applicability and effectiveness of MDA on website analysis. In addition, it is hoped to push the combination of MDA with important social issues, and take further research on them. |
