| Gone with the Wind and Red Sorghum are the representative works of Margret Mitchell and Mo Yan, both of which are highly praised all around the world. Despite the fact that many scholars have studied these two works respectively from various views, few of them have tried to compare these two works from the feminist theory point of view. Although as the respective heroines in the two novels, Scarlett O’Hara and Dai Fenglian grow up in different countries and eras, they share many similarities in their characteristics and fates. Both of these two novels reflect the writers’ deep concern for women’s fate and encouragement for women’s pursuit for freedom and humanity, by depicting the female characters’ rebellious spirit against traditional codes for women under the patriarchal society and their brave pursuit for their love and life. This thesis compares the two heroines from feminist perspective to explore how they fight against their destined female fate in the war times and analyze their similarities and differences in female consciousness under different social and cultural backgrounds. On the basis of detailed analysis and comparison, this thesis searches for the comparability between these two novels, and in the meantime indicates the importance of individual revolting consciousness for women to control their own fate. |
