With the increasingly significant status of English, the role of oral English in cross-cultural communication is also rising simultaneously. In English teachingfield, oral English teaching has attracted extensive attention, but the oral English ability of non-English major postgraduates is not much satisfactory after learning English for many years. In addition, with the rapid development of China’s economy, there is an ever-rising demand for comprehensive talents. On the other hand, the traditional teaching of oral English is only concerned with improving students’ language skills without considering the learning of subject content, which is not conducive to meeting society’s high demand for comprehensive talents. Content and Language Integrated Learning(CLIL), which focuses on the learning of language skills as well as the learning of subject content, can change the isolation of language learning and subject learning, and meet the needs of the society to some extent. The chief focus of this thesis is to study the application of CLIL in oral English teaching for non-English major postgraduates. Firstly, the general information and relevant research of CLIL as well as oral English are described in detail. Secondly, the author conducts an empirical study which includes questionnaires, experiments, tests and interviews to verify the effectiveness of this application to oral English teaching. The experiment is conducted between two classes from China University of Petroleum(East China). The results summarized from the tests and questionnaire indicate that CLIL can provide students with more subject knowledge and technical terms through the medium of language, and this kind of combination of subject knowledge and language makes the content of language output more substantial. Furthermore, the application of this approach can meet the oral English learning needs of non-English major postgraduates to a certain extent, and solve some difficulties that students encounter in oral expression.
