The main purpose of this paper is to review the researth on asymmetries between the upper and lower visual fields on working memory. Such as the Asymmetry between the Upper and Lower Visual Field on Working Memory, the behavioral and neural mechanisms of research results on vertical asymmetry, the attentional differences between the Upper and Lower Visual Field,the relations between visual working memory and attention.The research uses the classical paradigm of visual working memory,and the asymmetry of the upper and lower visual field is investigated.Experimental procedure uses MATLAB. The stimuli is different curvature of the black curve. The highest point(or lowest point) of the curve deviates from the central fixation point of the pixel range between 10-190, and the curvature of the curve consists of three levels, 10-70,70-130 and130-190. When the memory curve is lost, subjects should use a moving mouse to present the shape of the curve. The height difference between the curve and the set curve is the result of the test report.Although there are many studies in the view of asymmetry between the upper and lower visual fields on working memory,but has not been unanimous conclusion. In addition, according to the different cognitive ability, visual field asymmetry of the mechanism is also different, this study focuses on in working memory capacity, characteristics of vertical direction of asymmetry. The experimental materials is the non-semantic information-‘curve’.On one hand,we want to explore the asymmetry between the upper and lower visual fields on working memory,on the other hand, to discuss difference between the curve and the straight line.Experiment 1 was designed as 2(field:up,down)×3 degree(1,2,3) two factors within subjects.The results showed that the accuracy of the upper visual field was significantly better than that of the lower visual field. Analyze the standard deviation,we found that the memory performance standard deviations of the curve in the upper visual field are smaller,this shows that memory performance is more stable.In experiment 2, considering the curve toward may affect the result of experiment, the curve will be randomly presented in the vertical meridian of the screen. With 2(field:up,down) ×2(direction:upward,downward) × 3degree(1,2,3) three factors within subjects. Experiment 2a results indicate that the accuracy of upward curve was significantly better than that of the downward curve; when the curves appear in the lower field of vision, the downward curve recall accuracy was significantly higher than upward ones. Experiment 2b results show that the accuracy of the upper visual field was significantly better than that of the lower visual field, supporting the results of the Experiment 1,and when the curve was presented in the upper visual field,the memory accuracy of the upward curve was significantly better than that of the downward curve.In experiment 3,the curve will random location in the four quadrants virtual box, still use2(field:up,down)×2(direction:upward,downward)×3degree(1,2,3) three factors within subjects design.The results show that the accuracy of the upper visual field was significantly better than that of the lower visual field,and when the curve was presented in the upper visual field,the memory accuracy of the upward curve was significantly better than that of the downward curve.The results repeated the conclusion of the experiment 2b.In the fourth experiment, “linear memory”is further studied.To sum up, there is the existence of upper visual field advantage in visual working memory.
