The short story “The Reach”, written by famous American writer Stephen King,is chosen to be translated. It is a stream of consciousness story, set in Maine, northeast of America, where is the main place of the writer’s childhood and adult life. It mainly narrates how Flanders, the oldest woman in Goat Island, reviewed her thoughts and past action to cross the reach when dying, which also symbolizes her accepts of her next life. The story also describes a group of almost isolated islanders, who are dependent on each other and treat each other more like family than neighbors, and they do not have the ready availability of assistance from external places.During the process of translation, Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory is adopted to guide the translation with many translation methods, which means to achieve the closest natural target language in translating the original text, and to make the greatest efforts to the original information in the real and effective delivery to the target language readers. The practice report can be divided into five chapters. Chapter one introduces the translation background and significance, the author and the original text. Chapter two is the description of the translation process—preparation before translation, description of translation and proofreading the translation. Chapter three mentions the theory evidence-functional equivalence theory. Chapter four is the case analysis, which interprets respectively from the two different levels—lexical and syntactic level, based on the guiding role of the functional equivalence theory in fiction translation; free translation and part of speech conversion translation methods at the word level, and division translation, reverse translation, linear translation to realize the syntactic level of functional equivalence. Chapter five is the conclusion, a summary of my reward and experience in the translation project.
