As a branch of social history, the history of routine life is a history that studies the activities people take in daily life. It is a bond of all fields of history. The history of routine life has gained great attention in history academia. By studying the public with microscopic study and case study, the history of routine life reveals human history. One day of China is a report collection of Chinese routine life in the 1930 s written by many writers. Studying Chinese daily life with the help of the report is of great significance for revealing the society of the Republic of China. The purpose of this thesis is to clarify people’s routine life and to interpret the social psychology of the Chinese people on the eve of Anti-Japanese war by studying One Day of China. In the process of writing this thesis, the author followed the following research processes.First, the author read many history materials and noticed that research concerning social psychology of the Chinese people on the eve of Anti-Japanese war are insufficient. The author therefore decided to commit to the research. By absorbing the merits of previous studies, combined with newspapers, periodicals, literary anthology, diaries, biographies, scholarly works and so on of the Republic of China, the author sorts out, restructures, and analyzes One Day of China and successfully reveals the routine life and the spirit of the public in the Republic of China. Then, the author analyzed how and why were One Day of China produced, and structured the content of it. By analyzing and structuring, the author came to the conclusion that the articles written by the leftism were all based on their political positions and strong political opinions which were strongly influenced by the political situation of that time. However, the objectivity and authenticity of One Day of China as historical data can not be denied. One Day of China collected 490 articles from different areas which described Chinese lives on the May 21 st of 1936(It is the April 1st of the Luna Calendar). The articles were written in many forms and described many things in China, answering the following two questions: How fragmented China was? Is it possible to revive this nation? These two questions were also the content and questions this thesis is going to answer. When sorted out the materials about routine life, ways of communication and beliefs of Chinese people, the author founded out that although most Chinese people suffered poverty and deficiency of beliefs in 1936, national consensus was reached in the fatal period of our country. On the basis of that, the author attempted to discuss the following questions: analyzing the contradiction between the rapid development of our country from 1927 to 1937 and extreme poverty of Chinese people, as was described in One Day of China; meanwhile, rethinking about the edition process and purpose of One Day of China; exploring whether the viewpoints of Chinese people was consistent with the government’s policies towards some special events, for example, the smuggling of Japanese businessmen; comparing the self-recognition of people in evaded places with the recognition of non-invaded places to the invaded ones, which, laid the foundation for the discussion of the narration of routine life and national imagination in 1930 s, as was described in One Day of China; exploring how the intense situation between China and Japan before the explosion of anti-Japanese war, changed Chinese people and how was that point explained in One Day of China. Through the analysis of One Day of China, the author believes that China could have surpassed Japan and had a bright future of prosperity. In the last part, the thesis further introduced One Day of China, from which readers will have a understanding of the collection. One Day of China is very rich and complex in content and is very valuable as historical data. This thesis also discussed the significance of history of routine life in constructing historical dimension.
