| It was a long history that African Americans were subjected to socialdiscrimination and oppression in the United States. In order to eliminatediscrimination and oppression, and obtain freedom and equal rights not only in lawbut also in reality, African Americans had made great efforts and continuous struggle.Ultimately, the Civil Rights Movement broke out in the1960s in America, which wasan important social movement in American history. The Civil Rights Movement notonly had changed the fate of African Americans, and given them equality, freedomand dignity, but also deeply affected the life and idea of all Americans. The movementpromoted the federal governments to eradicate racial segregation system andultimately eliminated the white supremacy. It won the civil rights for AfricanAmericans and changed the United States from a society of tolerated racism anddiscrimination to the society which acknowledges equal rights for every citizenregardless of color and race, thus deeply changed people’s thought. This article aimsto analyze the positive effects of the Civil Rights Movement in the1960s on the socialstatus and living conditions of African Americans, and contends that after the CivilRights Movement, African Americans have made great improvement in terms ofpolitics, income, employment and education; but they still have to face certain plights.There is no denying the fact that there have been great changes and improvement forAfrican Americans in their social status, and that the attitude of the white towards theblack has become more and more ease. However, in economic and political field,there is still a disparity between blacks and whites. The discrimination of the whitetowards the black has never completely disappeared. Therefore, there is still a longway for African Americans to get more civil rights. Under the inspiration of the CivilRights Movement, African Americans will continually fight for their civil rights andtruly integrated into the white mainstream society. |
