In July,1919, Hu Shi, Li Dazhao and others had great differences on how tosolve the problem of Chinese society and published articles to illustrate their ownopinions, which is known as the debate about “problem and doctrine” dispute.This paper mainly research on Mao Zedong’s attitude towards “problem anddoctrine” dispute, involving the three famous figures in the modern history of China,Mao Zedong, Hu Shi and Li Dazhao. Mao Zedong was in support of Hu Shi duringand after the debate, so this article attempts to the controversy of Mao Zedong’sattitude as the breakthrough point, to study the correlation of Mao Zedong’s thoughtand Hu Shi’s thought in the early period. Then explores the early relationship of MaoZedong and Hu Shi, and the reason why Mao Zedong turned into a marxist.This article discusses from the following four parts:The first part discusses the background and the essence of the “problem anddoctrine” dispute which is a basic overview of the background and controversy. It canhelp us to understand the views and attitudes at that time after a simple discussionabout the background of the problem. And introduced the attitude of the academicdebate about this issue today.The second part discusses Mao Zedong’s attitude towards “problem and doctrine”dispute, introducing Mao Zedong’s early thought and the reason why he supports forHu Shi. Then summarise Mao Zedong’s articles published during this period. Theseare the reactions of his early thought, so it is the main part of this paper.The third part discusses the relationship between Mao Zedong and Hu Shi afterthe controversy. Mao Zedong’s supports for Hu Shi doesn’t end up with the debate,moreover, he trusts Hu Shi for a long time and asks Hu Shi for advice about theproblems that he concerned.The fourth part discusses the reason and the process that Mao Zedong turned intoa marxist. As the time goes by, Mao Zedong’s thought changes gradually. Heabandoned the reformism and chose marxism.
