In recent years, the proportion of America’s middle class population in theAmerican social structure has been constantly growing. In fact, there is no cleardefinition for America’s middle class. If asked, most people would define themselvesas middle class.15%of people in the United States are rich, and15%poor, so theremaining70%are in the middle-class category.Nowadays, the middle class families in the US pay more attention to familyvalues, and a series of family problems that have appeared constantly affect the wholesocial stability and development in the United States. What’s more, for the middleclass women, the problems that they have been facing are family conflicts, familypatterns and different family values that they pursue, which brings us to a brand-newperspective to research. In order to understand American society better, we need toconstantly dig in depth these family problems being faced by the contemporarymiddle-class woman.This thesis, through some research conducted by institutions in recent years,combining the analysis of Desperate Housewives, explores family problems faced bycontemporary American middle-class women, which includes the conflicts in familyfinancial matters, children education, and relationships between housewives and theirhusbands, children, and in-laws, single-parent, divorced and remarried families, andchallenges facing the middle class-women with different values.This thesis aims to highlight family problems, which draws our attention tofamily life and their influences, and what kind of values that we build in the familylife. It urges us to think further in solving or alleviating the problems, and to come upwith more feasible measures to nip the problems in the bud.
