Hundreds of thousands of Overseas Chinese returned to China from Southeast Asia in1950s and1960s, and their connections with Overseas Chinese, were interrupted due to thethen political relationship between China and Southeast Asia. After China undertook theReform and Opening up Policy, the Returned Overseas Chinese and their relatives wereallowed to gradually restore their transnational links with Overseas Chinese in a variety ofways, such as visiting friends and relatives, traveling, studying overseas and seekingbusiness cooperations. What’s more, returned overseas Chinese have extended the existingtransnational network of relationship into a more modern one.This paper takes returned overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia as the subject of studyand those at Jinan University as cases of study. Judgment sampling and stratified samplingmethods are used to extract samples. My work analyses the formation and development oftransnational network of returned overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia usingtransnationalism and social capital theory and so forth, on the basis of interviews withreturned overseas Chinese at Jinan University. At the same time, this research focuses onthe interactive and game relationship between transnational network of returned overseasChinese from Southeast Asia politically, socially, economically and culturally, from thethree respects of the remittances, re-migration and identification network mechanism ofreturned overseas Chinese. At last, this thesis briefly addresses the characteristics oftransnational network and the causes of its formation.The characteristics of transnational network of returned overseas Chinese, can besummed up as followings: The families of returned overseas Chinese have played a criticalrole in transnational network; There are obvious differences within the transnationalnetwork of returned overseas Chinese; Returned overseas Chinese have special marital andgeopolitical relations; Returned overseas Chinese share the common social memory in theprocess of repatriation, resettlement and the Cultural Revolution; Hong Kong occupies aspecial position in the transnational network.
