The study is a theoretic and historic study of the Ukraine issue and the Ukraine crisis in the post-cold era with a special theoretic prospects of both the geographical politics and the civilization. Viewed from the perspective of geographical politics, the collapse of the Soviet Union hugely released Ukrainian’ geopolitical space, and made Ukraine appear on international stage as an independent country. For Russia, there is a deep historic and cultural origin between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine is not only the important access to Europe and the Black Sea, but also the last barrier that defends the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s strategic aggression. Ukraine is thus a key to Russia’s revival as a world power. For America, Ukraine is not only an important springboard that may help to get the dominant position in Eurasia, but also an important prevention to Russia’s comeback as a competitor for the world hegemony. For EU, Ukraine is an important part to extend eastward its Western systems and values. The fight between Russia and West countries for Ukraine is an outer factor leading to the Ukraine crisis. The basic dynamic of the evolution from the Ukraine issue to the Ukraine crisis is related with the civilization. The line dividing the Western civilization and the Orthodox civilization passes through Ukraine and the rest Central-Eastern Europe. This civilization gap has made it impossible for Ukraine to form a basic consensus regarding the state development path and the foreign policy orientation for a long term, which has led to the deep differences in public opinions, sway in policy, and the unreasonable development path, thus providing opportunities for foreign intervention. Russia has deliberately tried to restore its influence sphere along the dividing line between civilizations, and its fight for Ukraine is part of this long-term strategic effort, while the West, however, inclined to deny this line and consistently pressed the traditional Russian influence sphere. The Russians were finally forced to strike back in this crisis. The contest for Ukraine between Russia and America has deeply worsened the relations between Russia and America, triggering a new cold war. Europe has also become Russia’s strategic competitor instead of cooperator. Ukraine has leaned on West thoroughly and the civil war has evolved into an agent war. The world strategic configuration are thus experiencing the deepest change since the end of the cold war.
