Translation Of The Professional Terms In The Legal Text From ThePerspective Of Skopos Theory

This is a translation project. The original text is the Chapter 43 of the Flexible Tenant Lease, which is a legal text about flexible lease from Advanced Real Estate Law Course 2006 in Texas. It is helpful for us to know about the system of flexible lease in America and to perfect our legal system by reading and translating this text. “The Flexible Lease” means a way of facile lease and personalized customization based on the requirements of tenant. This can save much cost and make full use of the space. While for the landlord, he/she can take advantage of the space and fulfill its utmost value. The flexible lease is the future of house tenancy. By translating this text, we will be able to understand the system of flexible lease in America; as a result, the flexible lease in our country can be promoted by borrowing its advantages. There is no translation of this text in China until now, and it is the first time to translate it. Therefore,many people can read it.This translation project has 5 chapters. The first chapter is introduction, which presents the background and significance of the project, as well as a brief introduction to the original text. The second chapter explains the Skopos theory from the perspectives of its basic content and significance. The third chapter investigates how to choose the Chinese words under the Skopos theory, and two examples are given to illustrate this chapter, such as “Expansion right/Contraction right”. Then chapter four is about how to create a new word based on Skopos theory, and “holdover”, “unfettered right” and “radius restriction” are given as examples. There are many professional terms in legal English which have no corresponding Chinese words, and we must create new words. In the last chapter, the author concludes the experiences and lessons from the translation in chapter five.
