As we all know, the land is the material foundation of human survivaland development. The problem of institutional transition in land remainsa focus for the economic development of all countries all the time, Britainis no exception, of course. Thus, it is very necessary to study on Britishland institutional transition. This thesis mainly studies the changes ofthe land institution in Britain from the late14th century to the17thcentury, the British land institution in this period mainly experiencedby villeinage to copyhold and then to freehold and leasehold, and thisthesis mainly discusses the reasons for the rise of copyhold,establishment of copyhold and evolving process of copyhold. Copyhold wasevolved from villeinage in the late14th century, then the leaseholdersobtained the lands by copy of court-roll, the lands acquired by peopleis called, people who lease land are called copyholder, this landinstitution is called copyholder. In this thesis, on the one hand,according to the British history in this period the writer specificallyanalysis the decline of villeinage and the rise of copyhold. On the otherhand, through the use of some of the dataļ¼Œthe writer want to illustratethe characteristics of copyhold, the differences between copyhold andfreeholder and the differences between copyhold and rent. This thesis is divided into three sections to describe the problem,including the preface, text and conclusion. Preface of this thesis is tointroduce the historical background, discussed the scope and academicvalue. Text is divided into three chapters, the first chapter focuses onthe disintegration of villeinage, the second chapter is about the riseof copyhold and the establishment of copyhold, the third chapter is aboutto the characteristics of copyhold and the development of copyhold. Thelast part is the conclusion of the thesis, the writer briefly describedthe decline of copyhold and summarized the whole thesis, then from theperspective of the land transfer to clarify the status and function ofcopyhold in the whole history of Britain land institution.
