Kashgar at the crossroad of the Silk Road has been the political, economical and cultural center of the whole Uighur society since 9th century. Over the long historical course, Uighur has created a rich and colorful material and spiritual culture and formed their characteristic ethnic culture passing down through generations. Now under the support of a series of favorable political changes and policies, like the establishment of the socialism in China, the deepening implementation of the policy of reform and opening up, the implementation of the strategy of West Development, the establishment of special economic zones of Kashgar, and the reform of the old town, as well as with the push of the trend of economic globalization, Kashgar Uighur has once again broken through the downfallen and closed condition since the Opening of the New Sea-route, and been brought to the fore for increasingly frequent exchanges with the outside. Economic globalization and market trade has brought people great convenience and also the huge challenge to the traditional living modes of the ethnics. The change to their social culture can be reflected in every aspect, especially the explicit or hidden transition in traveling culture. In history, the ancestors of Uighur was called “Gaoche”, the name reflective of its long history of raveling culture which constitute an important part of their ethnic culture. Now under the influence of modern society, the long traditional traveling culture is also facing changes. Therefore, it will become an important research topic to describe the cultural transition, get to the underlying reasons and analyze the effects of the cultural transition on Kashgar Uighur social culture.Cultural transition is a research topic with the most sense of the times. Since 1980 s, domestic scholars in ethnology has already shifted their research onto to the specific cultural phenomenon and modernization progress of all the ethnics from the previous social formation theories, and in this process, there has sprung up a group of applied research results on ethnic culture and social development. However, the research on the development and transition of Kashgar Uighur social culture remains limited and requires deeper investigation and theoretic research, especially on the traveling culture of Kashgar Uighur.Based on the field investigation in the old town of Kashgar where the Uighur is concentrated, the thesis has used the research method of combining the subject and object, microscope and macroscope, and made a synchronic combing of the representative cultural transition phenomenon in combination of historical literature, and then conducted a proper comparative research on the traditional traveling culture before liberation and the modern traveling method after the policy of reform and opening up under the background of synchronicity. The research is made under the fundamental guiding ideology of historical materialism and dialectical materialism and such theoretical basis of cultural anthropology, Folklore and Ethnology. In this way, the thesis tries to draw a conclusion about the process and characteristics of traveling culture transition of Kashgar Uighur, and examine the gain and loss in that process. The thesis is composed of three parts. The first part has introduced the purpose and the significance of the research, the research status and the latest research trend of the related topic at home and aboard, as well the research method and major idea adopted in the thesis; in the second part, the traditional traveling culture of Uighur has been introduced, mainly covering the historical records of the traditional traveling culture, the traditional traveling route and means, the traditional traveling characteristics and customs, and the representations of the related industry and cultrate to traveling; while in the last part, the thesis focuses on traveling culture transition and analysis, mainly describing the transitions in the traditional traveling route, means, characteristics and customs, and exploring the reasons for the cultural transition.
