According to international standards, population aging in China has been already serious. The pattern of elder-care is not only a key to deal with the aging peak, but also directly related to life quality and well-being of the elderly. Although in a very long period of time, family pattern will still be a basic pattern, it has been unable to bear the elder-care burden along with the miniaturization and decentralization of family. That is particularly obvious in rural areas, making the life quality of the elderly in rural areas worrying. This paper aims to study the impacts of different elder-care patterns on dimensions of the rural elderly’s well-being and particularly make a comparative study on a special group, the empty nest elderly, in order to scientifically, objectively and fully estimate the relationship between the elderly’s life quality and elder-care patterns, as well as the performance of current social elder-care policy.Firstly, on the basis of literature reviews at home and abroad, variable selection and data integration are done by reference to national baseline data of CHARLS in 2011. Thus variables are set according to two dimensions of well-being (i.e. general well-being and emotional well-being) and four elements of elder-care patterns (i.e. source of income, live arrangement, living care and spiritual consolation).Secondly, Ordered Probit regression model is selected as main analysis tool. On basis of the whole sample regression, the marginal impacts of three elder-care patterns on the overall well-being and emotional well-being are calculated. In order to ensure the robustness of the model, structural equation model (SEM) is constructed based on the correlation of variables for path analysis and coefficient estimation. The results indicate that:family pattern which is gradually weakening remains significant effect on well-being; social pattern is in heavily lack where the New Rural Social Pension Insurance works limitedly; for independent pattern, the elders controlling source of income, living with spouse, having operational abilities in daily life and often taking part in social activities prefer to make a positive evaluation to well-being, whereby the marginal effect of operational abilities is greater.Thirdly, the empty nest elderly and the non-empty nest elderly are Ordered Probit regression estimated, with a comparative study made on the conditions of their well-being and the different impacts of elder-care patterns. The results indicate that: compared to empty nest elderly, the well-being of non-empty elderly is more dependent on elder-care elements such as economic capacity, service facilities for the aged, etc. Finally, this paper gives suggestions as follows:To combine the market and the state on the basis of family pattern is the basic measure to alleviate current rural elder-care problems and medical conflicts. In the context of finance capacity, the policy of New Rural Social Pension Insurance shall be improved, and the level of pension shall be appropriately increased. Meanwhile, local government shall actively promote rural professional construction such as homes for the elderly and elderly association, in order to enhance the quality of daily and public cultural life of the elderly. In modern background of the gradual weakening of the family cares, it is supposed for the children to undertake the parents support obligations, and for government departments to assume more of the pension duty through public finance, which is a challenge that must be faced by a country moving towards an aging society.
