As one of the phenomena that have brought the most profound effect on human civilization since the Renaissance, fashion is considered as the core of human life by some researchers. Fashion has been deeply rooted into every aspect of people’s everyday life, therefore, the relations between fashion and “Everyday Life” are fairly worth discovering. From the perspective of the “Everyday Life” theory in Marxism, this paper divides the everyday life into two dimensions—the “Everyday Life” and the “un-Everyday Life”, based on which the meaning of fashion under different social backgrounds is analyzed and the evolution of fashion properties with social development is discovered. In the preliminary nature-based phase of social development, fashion is considered to have an “Everyday Life” property that is biased toward the private sphere. However, with the advent of the material-based social phase, under the background of symbolic society and consumer society, despite of its private value in the “Everyday Life” dimension, fashion has also permeated into the public sphere, and is showing its value in the “un-Everyday Life” dimension, including politics, economy, culture and art. In this whole process, fashion has experienced an evolution from being a simple activity of spontaneous aesthetics in the “Everyday Life” dimension to becoming an exhibition of manifold values in the ”un-Everyday Life” dimension. Moreover, fashion has established the communication between “Everyday Life” and “un-Everyday Life” in the post-modern society, making a big difference and promoting the social development. The evolution process of fashion is a result of the social and cultural mechanism. The future development of fashion will always be consistent with the development of society. When the society reaches a phase where all people enjoy a free and comprehensive development, “Everyday Life” and “un-Everyday Life” will finally combine and be coordinated. We can also be illuminated by Marx’s description of the future society: the future fashion will exceed the category of “Everyday Life” and “un-Everyday Life”, and become an everlasting pursuit of human beings for the absolutely free and liberated lifestyle.
