The main functions of prison include punishment and rehabilitation of the prisoners, which is also the embodiment of the penalty purpose. Successfully reform the prisoners can reduce the incidence of recidivism rate and is crucial to the stability of our society. The parole system plays an important role in the prison management, which could incent criminals’ confession and repentance and also is one of the most important means to reform the prisoners. The necessary condition of a prisoner to sentence parole is "the performance of true repentance". Correspondingly, a series of evaluation methods of prisoner’s performance was established in the long-term practice. However, the modification of penal system and the adjustment of these methods during application made the defects of existing evaluation methods increasingly apparent. To better solve this problem, accurately evaluate "the performance of true repentance" of a prisoner is of great importance.This thesis was divided into four parts.In the the second chapter, the history, development, current situation and the function of the parole system in our country was introduced. In the next chapter, the historical evolution and the current situation of appraisal system was elaborated. In the fourth chapter, the problems and the possible underlying reasons of existing appraisal system under the influence of the modification of the penal system was analyzed. In the last chapter, corresponding to the problems and reasons mentioned in the previous chapters, some improvement methods were proposed. The author of this study analyzed the practical problems under the guidance of the existing theories and proposed some methods to improve the existing evaluation system, attempting to evaluate "the performance of true repentance" more accurately and better judge the well-rehabilitated prisoners and release them back to the society, and therefore, reduce the recidivism and maintain social stability.
