A Study Of The Application Of English Newspaper Reading In English Reading Teaching In Senior High School

The new curriculum reform of high school English teaching has set a higher standard for students’ reading ability, which as a means of language input, is considered as an important means and focus of language learning and teaching. Although in language teaching practice, we have put a lot of efforts in it and have adopted a variety of methods, the effect is not very obvious. The main reason can be concluded as follows:Firstly, many teachers ignore the reasonable teaching strategy and lack the consciousness of cultivating students’ interest in English reading. Secondly, quite some students’ vocabulary can not meet the requirements for reading the materials. Finally, the outdated English textbooks are not interesting enough to arouse the students’ interest in reading and achieve the necessary language input. Based on the above problem analysis, the writer of this paper decides to choose high school students as the research subject and apply the most updated language form and content-the English newspaper reading activity, to the teaching of English Reading in senior high school, and tries to find out the effect of English newspaper reading in the improvement of students’ English learning interest and English vocabulary building in order to find a practical and efficient method to improve student’s reading comprehension ability.The author chose two classes in Tianjin Fulun Middle School to carry out the experiment. Class5was the experimental class, in which the author applied English newspaper reading to reading teaching, while as the control class, Class6was still taught with traditional approach. SPSS11.0was used to measure the pretest and the posttest scores to figure out whether English newspaper reading can improve students’ reading ability.The research results showed that English newspaper reading not only can arouse the interest of the students in English reading, but also can help the students increase their vocabulary efficiently so it can effectively improve the students’ reading ability.
