Elementary school, which commences the compulsory education of theunderage, is the stage when the underage assimilates new knowledge and thingsmost efficiently as well as the important stage when the underage cultivate theirideological morality, behavioral habit and discernment capacity. In the complicatedenvironment, media literacy education plays a decisive role in helping pupils todevelop correct outlook on life and values. The aim of media literacy education is tocultivate five capacities of the citizens, including the abilities of acquiringinformation via media, selecting the required information contents, evaluating andinterpreting information connotation, blending in media life, and creating andspreading information. According to the characteristics of pupils such as cognitiveability, energy should be devoted to cultivating these five capacities step by stepduring media literacy education.Now, China is exposed to varieties of problems in the process of implementingmedia literacy education in elementary school. The major reasons include the lack ofmedia resource education resources and the boring teaching form, which arespecifically embodied in following aspects. Firstly,the lesson preparation stage facesthe shortage of available resources and difficulty in lesson preparation. Secondly, inclass, neither is student’s subjectivity exploited, nor is pupil’s learning initiativefully aroused. Thirdly, after class, there is a lack of necessary teaching reflection,which is adverse to the cultivation of divergent thinking and the establishment of therelationship between teachers and students. Fourthly, from the perspective oflifelong study, negative influence is exerted on the formation of personal knowledgemanagement.Characterized by individuality, sharing, and openness, social software willbe surely introduced into education to bring a new start for the implementation ofmedia literacy education among contemporary pupils. The emergence of socialsoftware is just capable of addressing a series of problems in media literacy educationof elementary school. Therefore, this study will introduce social software into medialiteracy teaching in elementary school in the hope of helping media literacy educationof elementary school in China out of the dilemma based on the reasonable applicationof social software. Meanwhile, related governmental departments are also called onto pay more attention to the media literacy education of pupils for the purpose of encouraging them to develop good media literacy and become an eligible citizen.This study is composed of the contents as follows. The first chapter elaboratesresearch background and problems from a macro perspective. The second chapterexplains relevant concepts of media literacy and social software, and meanwhilegives a brief introduction to several types of social software commonly used inteaching. The third chapter makes clear current situation of media literacy educationin elementary school at home and abroad. The fourth chapter investigates andanalyzes the implementation necessity and feasibility of media literacy education inelementary school as well as the existing problems of media literacy teaching inelementary school by means of questionnaire survey, interview and literatureanalysis. Then, efforts are spent in elaborating social software’s support for medialiteracy of elementary school in different stages including pre-class, in-class andafter-class stages. The fifth chapter resorts to case study method. In the class of Powerof Role Models, for example, based on the combination of various types of socialsoftware, course design is implemented to provide new ideas and direction for medialiteracy teaching in elementary school in the hope of putting it into practice in thefuture for the purpose of realizing the perfect combination between social softwareand media literacy education of elementary school.
