English writing has long been playing a vital role in English teaching and learning as well as in the college entrance examination. with the New English curriculum criteria put into practice in Tianjin in2006, the requirements of English writing for Senior high school students have been enhanced.This thesis aims to apply the training of lexical chunks to teaching English writing in senior high schools, with the purpose to help improve students’ comprehensive English writing ability.Much deep thinking about applying the lexical chunks training to English writing results from previous study in English teaching and learning:In what way can the training become more scientific and systematic? Can it be widely accepted in senior high schools? Although the study of lexical chunks is promising at home and abroad, few ready-made methods about such study in English writing in senior schools can be found. Therefore, this research will mainly center on the process of teaching and learning English writing. An experiment has been conducted in Yangcun No.l high school in Wuqing District, Tianjin, to testify whether regular training of lexical chunks can help improve students’ writing competence and language proficiency. The hypothesis:The training of lexical chunks can improve writing in senior English Teaching is proposed. The research questions are as follows:(1). Is the teaching mode proposed by the author effective for helping students accumulate lexical chunks?(2). Can students’ writing ability be promoted by systematic lexical chunks training?(3) Can the focus on lexical chunks training in English help raise students’ awareness and cultivate their interests of English learning? The research methods are the pre-and post-test questionnaires, the pre-test and post-test, classroom observation, interview and learning log. The author also designs the training mode which is suitable for senior two students’ english level so as to achieve high reliability and validity and quantitative analysis through SPSS17.0has been conducted.The results have shown the following aspects:(1) Students in the experimental class have enlarged their vocabulary, which is presented in their composition;(2) There is positive correlation between lexical chunks training and writing scores, as well as total scores. Students in the experimental class have better performance not only in English writing but also in other aspects of the examination papers than students in the controlled class, for example, reading comprehension, cloze etc.;(3) More students are learning English more actively.In conclusion, the current research has proved the research hypothesis and the training of lexical chunks can be adopted in English teaching in senior schools.
