Situational Language Teaching In China’s High School English Grammar Teaching

Grammar, as the internal core part of language, plays an important role in improvinglanguage skills. Correct and proper grammar leads credibility to written documents anddialogue; it demonstrates intelligence and eloquence. Moreover, grammar ensures yourmessage broadcast effectively and unambiguously. Therefore, grammar teaching has beenplaying a very important role in English teaching in China. However, for many years, it hasbeen laborious, time-consuming, and ineffective. In our English practice, teachers usuallyteach grammar rules and students practice mainly by means of multiple choices, which resultsin tiredness and boredom in both students and teachers. Therefore, it is quite urgent to changethis situation.Based on the study of grammar teaching in senior high school, this study starts from thetheory study of situational language teaching method. The research set in a high school ofChengdu, to find the current status of English grammar teaching, the application status ofsituational language teaching to high school English grammar teaching in classroom, as wellas whether the situational language teaching can properly used in English grammar teachingin the classroom by doing questionnaires, and interviews about the English teachers andstudents. After analyzing the questionnaires and interviews, the author find some problemsand the possible causes of these problems in situation teaching, and draw some summaries.This article finally concludes a few teaching enlightenments as the following:1, teachersshould strengthen the knowledge of situational language teaching. Successful teaching practice is based on the mastering of the teaching theory. Only mastering the theory inthe right way, can the teachers use it fluently, flexibly and properly;2, English teacher shoulduse the situational language teaching selectively. Situational language teaching is founded atthe basis of situation creating, however, not all of the classes can be created as a life-likesituation, nor we need to create the situation. So teachers need to create the situationselectively;3, they also should strengthen the communication between the students tooptimize the situational teaching effect. Students is the center of the class, teachers are notonly the initiators of the knowledge, but also the guide of the whole classroom. Therelationship between teacher and the students will influence the efficiency of the teaching andleaning directly.
