| For junior high students, it’s far from enough to master a foreign language only throughlearning and practicing in the40minutes’ class. It requires them to combine the languagelearning in and out of class, but also place much emphasis on strengthen the extracurricularEnglish learning, so as to ensure large amounts of language input and practice. Therefore,making survey for the students’ extracurricular English learning status quo in Haikou city, sothat we can explore the existing problems, put forward reasonable countermeasures, whichhas very vital significance.This research involves in Haikou area of1091junior high school students. It mainlyadopts literature method, questionnaire survey and interview method, focusing on four aspectssuch as learning attitude, learning environment, learning process and learning effects. Thisresearch sums up the following conclusions:1. Students attach more attention to the extracurricular English learning, but (a certain)lack of strong interest in learning, self-confidence and strong sense of participation, withexamination-oriented aims.2. Extracurricular English activities schools launched are colorful, and English teachers’academic level has received high recognition from students. However, students’extracurricular learning is not completely under the supervision and guidance of the teachers.English learning tool is diverse; family counseling is less, comparing to the heatsupplementary tutoring.3. The time students spend in extracurricular learning is less, most of which isconcentrated in the morning and evening.4. English learning resources are rich diversity, mainly characterized by thesupplementary materials. Language knowledge is highly regarded, while language abilityneglected. What’s worse, scientific English learning strategies are in urgent need.5. As for the audio-visual method, it’s mainly characterized by listening to English songsand tape, watching English movies; In regard to the content of reading and recitation, it’smainly concentrated in the words, the materials in the dialougue with the text and grammarrules; Regarding the ways to oral English training, it’s mainly featured by singing songs, reading the text and participate in oral training class; In the aspects of reading materials, it’sdominated by the supplementary reading materials, newspapers and magazines.6. The effects of extracurricular English learning are highly recognized by students,parents and teachers.7. There are certain differences in gender, grade, academic achievement and otherdemographic variables.In view of above-mentioned problems, this study put forward the correspondingsuggestions: In order to stimulate students’ interests in learning English, teachers should makegreat efforts to optimize English teaching in class, implement individualized education, andstrengthen psychological counseling. Furthermore, in order to improve the efficiency ofEnglish learning, teachers should strive for strengthening the guidance of learning strategies,and leading students to make full use of learning resouces. In addition, the evaluation modeshould be optimized, and the cultivation of the ability to use language should also be highlyregarded. And moreover, teachers’ heavy pressures in teaching should be alleviated, with aimsto strengthen the supervision and guidance of extracurricular English learning. Last but notthe least, parents should change their educational ideas, regard the heat supplementarytutoring rationally, and endeavor to build up home-school learning community. |
