The Study Of The Unbalanced Relationship Between Total Points Earned And Outcome In Table Tennis Matches

My study subjects are total points earned in table tennis games and outcome oftable tennis games. My investigation subjects are scores of table tennis games thattook place during2011-2013International Table Tennis Pro Tour. Majority oftournaments I investigated are1/64finals and above (minority of games are1/32finals and above), which include a total count of5124games of which2353gamesare male singles,2097games are female singles,337games are male doubles, and337games are female doubles. I find certain games among5124games I investigated,which include people who have total points advantages end up losing and people whohave total points disadvantages end up winning, and try summarize the data so that Ican generalize the unbalanced relationship between total points erned and outcomes intable tennis games.Before precede, I would like to define a key term:Specialoccasion--games in which people who have total points advantages end up losing andpeople who have total points disadvantages end up winning Due to the presence ofspecial occasions, contingency of the game has increased. Despite the contingency, Ifound out that the reason causing special occasions to happen is that the winnerusually lose one of the games by a significant points difference and net points ofwinning in games the winner end up winning are low. Study of special occasions notonly enriches the theoretic study of table tennis sports, but also reveals themalpractice of judging athletes by scores only. At the meantime, problems revealed bythis study can help China to establish a better table tennis athletes judging system byproviding some data references and theory references.Conclusions of this study arelisted below:1.Relationship between total points earned and outcomes is balanced becauseduring some games, people who have total points advantages end up losing andpeople who have total points disadvantages end up winning. The reason causingspecial occasions to happen is that the winner usually lose one of the games by asignificant points difference and net points of winning in games the winner end upwinning are low.2.Throughout the study, calculations showed that the chance for specialoccasions to appear is about3.69%. Sex of athletes is a not a variable that influencesthe chance for special occasions to appear in this case. However, in male singletournaments, as the tournaments progress, the chance for special occasions to appeargets less and less. For female single tournaments, on the other hand, the chance forspecial occasions to appear increases.3.The winners for both male singles and female singles in special occasions havesimilar distribution of which games he/she loses in a set. The chance of losing firstthree games is relatively high. Among first three games, chance of losing the secondgame is the highest. Among the final three games, the chance of losing the sixth gameis the highest. 4.By studying special occasions, the chances for special occasions to happenwhen the final score is4:3and4:2are different. When the final score of a game is4:3,the chance for special occasions to happen is the highest.5.The interval of percentage of scoring for winners in male singles when specialoccasions occur is from45.76%to49.67%. The interval of percentage of scoring forwinners in female singles when special occasions occur is from45.45%to49.66%.The frequency of percentage of scoring during special occasions is focused on theinterval from49%to50%. This study reveals the malpractice of judging athletes byscores only and raise questions against the traditional three-section evaluation method.Also, this study enriches the theoretic study of table tennis sports.6.The subjective reason for special occasions to appear is that athletes cannotmake appropriate strategic changes when athletes’ stamina and mentality change.Sometimes, special rules take apart in the reason causing special occasions to happenas well.Suggestions: improve athletes’ stamina, improve athletes’ strength of mentality,improve athletes’ ability of adaptation against different play styles and differentrubbers and etc.
