As we all know, China is a large country with all kinds of resources distributed unequally and imbalancedly including our educational resources. On the whole, the education of China has made great progress, however, there are still some education underdeveloped areas even in the eastern part of China, especially in the western districts, where education falls behind, especially education of senior high schools. We should realize that the districts where education is underdeveloped aren’t equal to the districts where economy falls behind or rural areas. Actually, the condition of senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas is caused by a lot of factors, such as outdated teaching methods, a lack of teaching equipments, poor teaching groups, a lack of many excellent students, the neglect of local society and so on.As a student who is going to rejoin English teaching group, the author will focus on the teaching methods to search a way of improving education of senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas. Since for a long time, cooperative learning has been playing a great part in English teaching at home and abroad and many scholars and experts have done many researches related to cooperative learning, they seldom focused on the application of cooperative learning in English class of the underdeveloped senior high schools. Therefore, based on their researches, the author will further their studies and mainly concentrate on the application of cooperative learning in underdeveloped senior high schools’ English class. And what the author is going to study contains three aspects. Can cooperative learning be used in English class at senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas? How does cooperative learning stimulate students’study in English class at senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas? Could cooperative learning help students improve their English scores? In order to better achieve expected research effect, based on pre-test, the author randomly chose an experimental class where cooperative learning was applied, and a controlled class where traditional teaching method was used in Lveyang Tianjin Senior High School. Through a semester’s experiment, the results of pre-experiment and the post-experiment were both collected and analyzed. After comparison and conclusion, though there are some limitations, in the aspect of learning atmosphere, cooperative learning could stimulate students at senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas in English learning and cooperative learning could stimulate students’ interest in learning English as well. Cooperative learning could improve students’ English score, but generally speaking, it’s only limited to those students whose English level is not so bad. To sum up, cooperative learning has proved fairly effective in helping improving the students’ English and it is well worth a try at senior high schools in education underdeveloped areas.
