Both historically and currently, education has been considered to be an important part in the development of society, for education plays an indispensable role in cultivating people to construct and developing society. However, the quality of education is closely related with the teachers, whose quality decides how well their students grow and develop to some extent. That’s why the in-service teachers’ professional develop have been more and more emphasized.This study specially focuses on the professional development of English in-service teachers to examine closely what motivates them to develop themselves and what are effective ways in promoting their development. The author adopts questionnaire and interview methods to do the research. 50 in-service English teachers finish the questionnaire and 5 of them are interviewed by the author. The interview is a further research which covers the shortage of questionnaire. The study shows that the motivation of English teachers’ professional development directly affects the result of professional development. Their motivations can be sort into the intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation which have different functions in promoting in-service teacher’s professional development. The intrinsic motivation includes:(1) to develop for interests of English(2) to realize life value(3) to improve students’ English achievement. The extrinsic motivation mainly includes:(1) to get more material rewards(2) to meet the current educational demands. In terms of teacher’s professional development ways, the study illustrates the following effective ways which are thought highly of by in-service English teachers: continuing education, backbone teacher training program, expert lectures and discussions, listening experienced teacher’s lesson, evaluating the lesson, school-based training, school visit, teacher’s competition and high-quality class selection. Accordingly, making clear motivation and finding effective ways are helpful for in-service English teachers. After understanding the motivation of teachers, schools can arouse more teachers’ interest of professional development. The ways are the suggestions for both schools and teachers to develop professionally and effectively.
