As New National English Curriculum(2002) requires, it is important to train students’ abilities to "access and process information, and especially think and express themselves in English". At the same time, there are some problems that exist in the traditional teaching. Therefore, educational studies and teaching reforms are booming all over the country. Therein, the Cooperative Learning method is gradually applied to the classroom teaching in English writing and vocabulary. These studies have found that the Cooperative Learning method urges group members to participate in the activities actively and positively, motivates their interest and develops their ability to think critically and learn from teamwork. Based on the previous studies, the researcher also conducts a further relevant study: An Application of Cooperative Learning in English Reading Teaching in Senior High School.The study tries to answer the following questions. After the Cooperative Learning method is applied to the English reading classroom, can it raise the students’ English reading interest? Can it profit the students’ English reading sub-skills in senior high schools? Can it improve students’ overall English reading ability? The researcher has chosen two classes as subjects at random according to the similar level of English reading interest, English reading sub-skills and English reading scores. Based on the three theories and a hypothesis, namely, Self Determination Theory, Constructionist Theory, Humanism Theory and Affective Filter Hypothesis, the experiment lasts for a term. The Cooperative Learning method is used in the experimental class while the control class follows the traditional teaching method. The subjects participate in the interviews, questionnaires and tests separately before and after the experiment. Data from the research are collected and analyzed in the SPSS software, followed by relevant discussion.The result of the research shows that the Cooperative Learning method is an effective way to improve senior high students’ English reading ability. Students’ English reading interest is increased significantly. Their overall English reading ability and English reading sub-skills are improved greatly.Based on the research finding, some suggestions are put forward. Creating a harmonious and pleasant atmosphere in the reading class is a prerequisite for applying the Cooperative Learning method, which helps guide collaborative approaches. With diverse reading materials through many more different channels, designing different kinds of classroom reading activities is crucial to reading. Changing the roles of teachers and being concerned about vulnerable reading groups in English reading class is very important. All in all, it is hoped that more English teachers can use the Cooperative Learning method in their English reading class.
