English writing is one of the basic language skills that junior middle school students need to master. According to Shanghai English Curriculum Standards for Primary and Secondary Schools, the writing kill at junior middle school stage is required to “write a coherent and linguistically correct essay of not less than 80 words”. It can be seen from this requirement that writing should not only spell correctly without grammatical mistakes but also have coherent meaning. In other words, writing should be logical, coherent and smooth.This article, based on the mind mapping theory, discusses the following questions: Can mind mapping improve the attitudes of students towards writing? Is mind mapping effective to enhance students’ writing skill? How to do it specifically?This article collates and studies the relevant information relating to mind maps and students’ English writing through literature review, questionnaire survey, interviews and experimental research and analyzes the change before and after the experiments so as to validate the experimental hypothesis.It is found from the result analysis of questionnaire survey, interview analysis and changes of students’ writing before and after the experiment that the writing level of experimental class students is improved faster than that of control class students and there is an obvious change of the attitude of these students towards writing. This study result shows that mind mapping, as a mind tool, can facilitate students to open their mind, smooth their language, properly organize the essay, substantiate the content and enrich the vocabulary. Meanwhile, these series of trainings help students learn to use some writing strategies and methods to have their writing level improved to a relatively large extent.
