English teaching is a process of interaction between teacher and student. Teacher talk plays an important role in teaching language and monitoring classroom, it influences the classroom teaching efficiency, and is vital to learners’ language learning. Teacher’s competence of monitoring and organizing class can be reflected in turn-taking. What’s more, classroom discourse is different from daily talk, for it aims to achieve some certain teaching objectives, so teachers usually use too much “teacher talk” and control turn taking and distribution. Besides, under the academic pressure and course task, many English teacher don’t have enough consciousness and practical experience in distributing turns, which influences the teaching efficiency.Based on Krashen’s input hypothesis, Swain’s output hypothesis and Seliger’s classifying of HIGS and LIGS, the paper tries to discover the characteristics and problems of turn taking and distribution in Chinese senior high school English classroom. It attempts to provide some reference and advice for senior high school English teachers. After studying this paper finds out that:(i) Teacher’s turn dominates the classroom, and the number of teachers’ turn is larger than that of students’. The senior the teachers, the fewer the teachers’ turn; relatively, The quality of the turns are much better in advanced class than that in adjustment class.(ii) In terms of turn distribution, the frequency of general solicit is higher than personal solicit and group solicit. Senior teachers prefer to use personal solicit and group solicit rather than use general solicit. The teacher uses more general solicit in adjustment class but uses more personal solicit in advanced class.(iii)Teachers tend to use clarification request and confirmation checks when meeting with communicative troubles. Teachers often use clarification requests and confirmation checks in advanced class, while three negotiation strategies are used closely in adjustment class.
