As we all know, reading is an essential part in the English teaching and it plays an important part in students’ comprehensive development and English learning. But for a long time, there exist many problems in current reading teaching in China. In classes, teachers who are in the dominant role stress more on language points and neglect the whole understanding of the context, which leads to students losing interest and enthusiasm in English. Therefore, it can not contribute to students’ overall development. How to make teaching effective and make students interested in the English class is a difficult problem for teachers to solve.In order to solve the problems, the writer combines the personal understanding about Constructivism; the study of Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis with her own teaching experience and put forward the student-centered situational teaching method, which enables students to create proper situations according to the materials. The writer hopes the thesis can give some effective suggestions for the teaching reform and can improve students’ ability in English reading.Situational teaching method means creating real situations or half—real situations to help students immerse in the English environment and to improve their learning interest. Based on this theory, students are the owner of the class and take part in the class activities actively. The writer puts forward two questions to solve: Can situational teaching method help students improve their reading ability in senior middle school? Can student-centered situational teaching method improve students’ English reading scores?During the experiment, the writer chose two teaching classes, one as the experimental class where the student-centered situational teachingmethod was applied, the other class as the control class where the traditional teaching method was used. 150 students were chosen in NO.2Middle School to finish the questionnaires, from which we know the students’ attitudes towards reading and their current teaching methods.Then, six months’ experiment was done in the experimental class. After analyzing the data in pre-test and post-test by SPSS, we get the answer that not only students’ reading scores but also their whole English scores have improved. In addition, 10 middle school teachers are also selected to have an interview, from which we know teachers’ attitude to student—centered situational teaching method and what we should focus on when applying this method in class. After analyzing the result, the writer makes a conclusion that the teachers are satisfied with the situational teaching method.The result of the survey indicates that situational teaching method is accepted by both teachers and students. The result confirms that the situational teaching method will be beneficial to the current improvement of reading teaching. It is not only a way to improve students’ learning interest but also has a great impact on students’ reading achievement. In the meanwhile, the situational teaching method develops the teachers’ ability as well.The survey proves that student—centered situational teaching method is an effective way to improve students’ reading ability.
