The importance of the students’ participation has been paid much attention since thereform of English curriculum. Many scholars and teachers have held a “student-centered”teaching idea. English is a world language which is very useful for students’ futuredevelopment. To acquire this language, students need to participate in learning processactively. The New English Curriculum(2011) advocates teachers to optimize the Englishclass and cultivate student self-learning ability in order to let them have a sustainabledevelopment. It is necessary that teachers should consider how to cultivate active learners andimprove students’ ability of participation. After the reform of curriculum, on one hand, manychanges have taken place in class teaching and there are many improvements as well. On theother hand, many problems still occur. These teaching ideas are deeply rooted in manyteachers’ mind: Many teachers think that a lively class should be an effective one and theyignore whether this class can promote students’ cognition and thinking ability or not.Although the teaching contents are designed beautifully and colorfully, students may notenjoy it or master the basic knowledge. We should also consider whether students focus ontheir study when they are sitting in the classroom and whether they are always dependent ontheir teachers and classmates while taking part in activities. The study pays much attention tothe effectiveness of the class and the degree of students’ participation. According to ProfessorKong’s concept of student participation, this study divides student participation intobehavioral participation, cognitive participation and emotional participation. This studychooses two classes’ students and six English teachers from second grade of one publicmiddle school of Xinxiang as the research subjects. In this study, we will have aninvestigation of the students’ participation in English classes and analyze the factors whichinfluence students’ participation by using the methods of literature review, questionnaire andinterview. Through analysis of the questionnaire results, we make a conclusion that theemotional participation of students is more frequent. The less one is behavioral participationand the least is cognitive participation. The correlation among the three forms of students’ participation is significantly positive. In addition, according to the study, the factors of gender, personality, the level of English competence, learning motivation, teachers’ qualities andarrange of teaching materials all influence students’ participation. Based on the researchresults, some countermeasures will be given for teachers. Firstly, teacher should have ascientific view of students’ participation and improve their own qualities. Secondly, it is veryimportant to create a democratic class atmosphere and arouse students’ learning interests andinner motivation of participation. Thirdly, teachers should learn to choose teaching materialswisely and organize activities properly. The significance of this study lies in the following two aspects: Firstly, through study instudents’ participation in junior middle school classes, we can have a deep understanding ofthe three forms of students’ participation. Teachers will have a scientific idea of students’participation and how to arouse students’ interests. For students, they can get someinspirations of effective learning from this paper. Secondly, by analyzing the factorsinfluencing student’s participation, teachers can organize class activities more effectively, improve overall qualities and enrich the English teaching theory.
