There are many problems in current English grammar teaching in Senior High School. There are also many arguments on grammar teaching. Should grammar be taught? To what extent should it be taught? And how should it be taught? So it is important for teachers to find more efficient teaching approaches in English grammar teaching in Senior High.Scaffolding instruction is one of the three instructions based on the constructivism theory. In teaching activities, scaffoldings refer to the assist or help from the teacher and classmates. Based on the assist or help, students accomplish the learning tasks which they can’t achieve independently. And once the learning tasks are completed, the scaffoldings will be withdrawn timely. In western countries, scaffolding instruction has been widely carried out. But in China very few studies have been carried out on it. Most related studies focus on English writing, listening and speaking, but very rarely in English grammar. Therefore, the study aims at two focuses1) whether the scaffolding instruction can improve students’ grammar competence.2) whether it can arouse the students’interest in grammar learning.An experiment was carried out in the study. The Experimental Class adopted the scaffolding instruction while the Control Class adopted the traditional approach. The experiment included both pre-test papers and post-test papers. In the end, a questionnaire was carried out in the Experimental Class so as to get the attitudes of the students towards scaffolding instruction. SPSS.19.0. was also appliedIt is shown from the results that students’ grammar learning can be improved through that scaffolding instruction. And most students’ interest in English grammar learning is aroused.Although the study has some shortcomings, it may help English teachers understand the scaffolding instruction more and deeper. It is hoped that the study can further the future study on scaffolding instruction in China.
