Along with the development of the reform in English teaching, the teaching methods have been improved to some extent. However, the traditional mode of teaching is still in dominant position. It is more and more unsuitable for the needs of the society and the students. In the English class of senior high schools, teachers speak a lot and students record a lot. In the process of passive learning, students gradually lose their interest and motivation. In this teaching mode, students just cram the knowledge for exams. That seriously violates the demands of the new curriculum standards. The new curriculum standards require cultivating the students’ autonomous learning ability. On the one hand, teachers should concentrate more on how to encourage the students to participate in the learning activities and how to develop their autonomous learning ability. On the other hand, students should improve the learning strategies and autonomous learning ability. English reading ability is a most important ability in English learning. Guided learning plan is designed according to the new curriculum standards and the aim of quality education. It is a kind of teaching method to lead the students to study autonomously and optimize their development.Based on the background above, this thesis mainly studies two questions. The first one is whether guided learning plan can strengthen the senior high school students’ ability in English reading. The second one is how to improve the students’ autonomous learning ability of English reading in senior high school. Guided by the theory of constructivism, humanism, and autonomous learning theory, the author did a research for 20 weeks in Dalian Development Zone No. 1 Senior High School. Two parallel classes were chosen to do the contrastive experiment, questionnaires, and tests on English reading ability. According to the analysis of the data and results, the new teaching method with guided learning plan can improve the students’ English reading ability and autonomous learning ability more efficiently than the traditional teaching method. Meanwhile guided learning plan can help the students in senior high school learn in cooperation, increase the students’ learning interest and motivation, and then cultivate life-long learning ability.
