Length approach is initiated by Wang Chuming from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. It aimed at dealing with performing difficulties, putting high due weight to enhancing students’ interest in learning by designing writing tasks. It conforms to the regulations of foreign language learning and creates possibilities for students to use English by adjusting the length requirements of composition.Vocabulary level of the students and English vocabulary teaching in senior high school is uneven, more input, less output. The phenomenon of teachers and students attaching much more importance to input and taking light of output still exists. Most teachers and students pay more attention to enlarging vocabulary size while ignoring the cultivation of vocabulary performance ability.This research aims to investigate the effects of Length Approach on English vocabulary learning in senior high school, especially the effects on vocabulary productive awareness and productive competence.This thesis includes the following six chapters, Chapter one is about general introduction which contains the background, significance, necessity, overall structure of this thesis. Chapter two mainly describes literature review of lexical knowledge which could give us a broad view of studies both at home and abroad. Chapter three describes the theory of Length Approach. Chapter four emphasizes the methodology of this study. This study will adopt a few methods, involving two final exams,two writing tests,two vocabulary tests and one questionnaire. Chapter five attaches more importance to data collection and analysis, and thus the researcher could have general information of the results. Chapter six summarizes the research, containing findings, implications for teaching, limitation of the whole process, and suggestions for further studies.In general, the experiment of Length Approach has achieved initial success in Xining No. 14 Senior High School. From the results of the posttests and questionnaire, the Length Approach can help students improve their English writing ability and comprehensive English proficiency, strengthen their awareness of using words and expressions and improve their vocabulary productive ability, help to memorize their vocabulary, enhance their English vocabulary learning.
