Over the past 30 years, the problem on high sex ratio at birth has become an indisputable fact, in China. The high sex ratio at birth, leading to the imbalance of sex ratio of total population, which caused a series of social problems, will damage the population system in benign operation in the future. Studies have shown that China has a dynamically growing sex ratio at birth since the eighty’s of last century, and with the development of economy and society, the high situation is also changing.China’s high birth sex ratio problem has aroused widespread concern from scholars and politicians. This paper considers that recognising the features and trends of the high sex ratio at birth in China has very important theoretical and practical significance to carry out comprehensive management and display. Using the data from national census of two years, 2000,2010 and the 2005 One Percent Population Sampling Survey, this paper, analyzes the characteristics of the high birth sex ratio in China, and measures the effect of various factors on the high sex ratio at birth, through calculating the contribution rate of different characteristics of the high birth sex ratio, namely factor specific contribution rate of the high birth sex ratio.Through analysing and comparing the data of sex ratio at birth, we found the characteristics of the high sex ratio at birth in China, including the features of the region, the property of urban and rural and the characteristics of birth order. From the regional characteristics, the high sex ratio at birth in China is mainly concentrated in the south central region and its neighboring provinces, the eastern region is higher than the western region. From the urban and rural characteristics, In 2010, the sex ratio at birth of town was higher than that of the rural, both of which were more than120, and the sex ratio at birth of city is relatively low, but in 2005 and 2000, the sex ratio at birth of rural was higher than that of town and city; On the side of changing trend, the phenomenon of high sex ratio birth in rural has been somewhat alleviated, but continued to rise in city. From the birth order characteristics, the sex ratio of the birth rise according to the order of the child; On the side of changing trend, the degree of high sex ratio at birth of the second child has dropped distinctly, but rose obviouslyof the first child, and has no big change of third plus child. From the contribution rate of region: obvious differences consist in different provinces, there are 11 provinces’ contribution rate are more than 4% in 2010, the contribution rate of those provinces take two-thirds; From the contribution rate of urban and rural: rural is always the highest one, there’s no big difference between urban and town, the contribution rate of rural has been falling down since 2000, while urban and town contribution rate have been still on the rise. From the contribution rate of birth order: the second child contribution rate is highest, but presents the downward trend, the first child contribution rate showed a rising trend, the third children contribution rate changed little.By analyzing the data of sex ratio at birth and the factor specific contribution rate of high sex rate at birth, we find it can not only simply use the birth sex ratio level as a standard to measure the high degree of a factor, but also need to combine the factors’ contribution rate to analyze, so as to get more accurate conclusions.
