Washback is an effect of language testing on language teaching and learning. This thesis is mainly focused on the study of washback on English teaching and learning caused by English reading test in secondary vocational schools. The aim of the study is to explore the positive and even the negative effects of secondary vocational English reading teaching and give out the pedagogical and testing suggestions on how to improve the positive effect on the reading teaching in the secondary vocational English.The study uses the questionnaire, interview and observation to analyze the positive and negative effects of the washback about English reading teaching in the secondary vocational schools and the effects on teaching ideas, teaching methods, learning ideas of students and learning methods. Results of this study show that:Reading test has an impact on the all aspects of English teaching, but in different extent and depth. It has a great influence on the teaching contents and teaching strategies of English teachers during the class, and has little influence on the teaching style.About 80% vocational students consider that tests have a positive effect on their English learning. The effect of reading tests on students is mainly reflected in the aspects of learning contents and learning objectives.In order to expand the positive reaction, first of all, the teacher should ensure the quality of reading test papers, then prepare the content of final reading test carefully, increase the number of subjective questions which could test students’ comprehensive ability, select enough and diverse reading materials and timely feedback the results of test.
